Play

When I arrived at my studio today with limited time, I opened the book at random and my word of the day was PLAY--to occupy oneself in amusement, sport, or other recreation: activity engaged in for enjoyment or recreation.

We do not stop playing because we grow old.
We grow old because we stop playing. Anon

Ah ha! a good call for the afternoon. I had been seriously attacking work, paper work, ad contacts, making the plan for the year ahead...on the computer and picking up yet another body of work from SPA members show which wasn't as lucrative as in past years and even recycling the trash. It was time to find play with the child within...where was she? Could play be accessed with the loud book on tape from the next room and no sun and time limit? My book on tape "Factory Girls" about migrant workers in China, young women leaving the countryside to go into the cities and work long factory days for little money to make "stuff" to send to US...very well done but way too serious!

Turned up the music in my ears, laid out a new large paper against the whole wall and mixed up a red with yellow and olive to earthen it and the play began. What fun it is to release into play!
I recommend it to all.

Yeah to you all! Any ideas about what can be done with large paper pieces....roll them up, cut them up, use as wrapping paper...

love the quote about 'play'-- which has to be a component of art making
