Art Walk, unruly pawns, and primitive shelter

It is feeling very much like December....busy, with special requests on scarves, holiday festivities, and even some snow finally. Not much time for writing on this blog if I really want to get done what I must. This delightful chess set was made by Abby Dreyer, whom we featured for Art Walk on Friday at Artisans Hand. So great to meet Abby who is delightful herself and the crowd swelled with ceramic artists come to see Abby. I made cookies and set up the event...must admit, I'm glad it is over. Yesterday Bruce and I were treated to an evening at the Library, full on festivity, delicious food treats and an entertaining talk by Chris Bohjalian, Vermont novelist, whose work I enjoy.

Today I awoke early to get silks painted before we headed up north through snow to Bruce's land. As we drove north the snow lessened and the fields became golden again, not snow covered. The land welcomed us with sunshine and we dragged floor panels into the woods...not ready to put up the yurt yet, but we did construct a primitive structure, a first shelter 8x12 with walls of woven branches and pine boughs, stuffed some with leaves, tarp covered. Amazing to feel so warm in it when the winds blew and snow swirled. I was feeling sorry not to have brought my camera, but Bruce consoled me..."Take it with your eyes." Made us proud.

No winter sleep for you...out and about, snow or no snow. Preparing your silk despite the cold...making a way for the art making to continue. The chess set is a great photo, captures that holiday shopping feeling...finding the perfect gift, artisan made. Good luck this season...I believe people are slowing down and buying with thoughtfulness and your gallery should do well.

let me get this straight - am I to understand that you and yours spent the night in your hand built shelter? my oh my! I'm in awe - tis the season and your gallery sounds like it is marching to that beat - all success :)

No, Jeane, we didn't spend the night there yet, but that's certainly part of the thinking. We will be packing the walls with snow and put a tent under the surrounding shelter. Bruce and I took off before dark and left my son and his friend to roast quail on a spit...they are the true adventurers.
Thanks, Mary Ann and Jean for your wishes for success! And ditto to you from me.

Great post, Maggie. I love the shot of the chess set. Wonderful to read about the yurt. More power to you! Must be very cool to put one together not to mention hang out in it amidst the snow. I am looking forward to seeing the scarves. Tis the season to shop. All the best with your gallery :-) xx
